House Hunting Chronicles: Are we done yet?

So much has happened since my last blog post, yet not much is new.

The “much” is more packing, sorting, cleaning, patching, purging, inspections, and a few tears. Way back in June, I was sure that we only needed two months to get everything done. My, how optimistic I was!

Recently purging has included letting go of my grandparent’s couch. The 78 year old sofa has found a new home, and I’m okay with that. My uncle had it beautifully reupholstered about 15 years ago, along with a reinforcement of the cushion springs and general maintenance. Likely it will last another 78 years.

The art deco china closet that was a hand-me-down from my grandmother’s best friend, well before the couch was purchased, has now moved to my local daughter’s house.

I am surprisingly okay with letting go of the antique furniture that for so many years were receptacles of love and memories. My youngest daughter, who lives in a tiny and perfectly lovely apartment, pointed out that the memories and pictures will remain, even if the physical items are gone. I have been leaning hard on the feng shui practice of only keeping things that make me feel good.

The hubby and I view this move as another adventure. We have ideas of what the perfect next (and maybe last) home will look like, but we are trying very hard to be open about the myriad possibilities. The move up here was SO stressful, but we ended up in a truly wonderful house. Most days we believe that the same thing will happen again. That we will find a great house within our budget. There are the occasional moments when I feel less sure. But we have been working toward this for so long now (8 months so far) that it is easy to feel discouraged even though the current house is not yet on the market and the inventory where we are going is so limited.

Until this week, we have resisted renting a storage unit and instead have filled the garage to the rafters (where we have some great storage space), but our local agent asked us to remove three bookshelves out of the loft, and we are out of space here to store them. Hopefully there will be a break in the rain so we can secure a storage space and move some items out of the house and yard.

The new that is about the happen: Marketing pictures are being taken this week. Carpet and window cleanings are scheduled. The house will pop up on the MLS by February 1. I have a fantasy of selling the house off-market before we have to live with 2-hour-notice-showings and multiple open houses.

If you, or anyone you know, is interested in a nice big four bedroom, three bath house in Ukiah, I’m sure we can get you a deal to buy it off-market before 2/1/24. Our agent is Josh Huff. 😃
